Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is a mental health condition triggered by a terrifying or traumatic event in one’s life. It is commonly associated with military veterans, due to trauma experienced in combat, but an estimated 7.8 % of Americans will experience PTSD at some point in their lifetime. It is estimated that 5.2 million are currently living with PTSD. While women are twice as likely as men to develop PTSD, it disrupts lives equally. PTSD is an intensely emotionally debilitating mental disorder responsible for causing severe anxiety, nightmares, and flashbacks.
65% of those suffering with PTSD, around 7.7 million Americans, are also experiencing addiction or substance use disorder. Symptoms of PTSD can be exacerbated with drug and alcohol abuse creating a vicious cycle difficult to break free from.
