Anxiety and Substance Abuse
The Anxiety and Depression Association of America defines ‘anxiety disorder’ as a set of specific psychiatric disorders that involve extreme fear or worry. The anxiety disorder umbrella includes generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder that may include panic attacks, social anxiety disorder, separation anxiety, and more. Approximately 40 million U.S. adults are affected by anxiety disorders in some form with only 1/3 reportedly seeking treatment.
Decades psychiatric research shows that anxiety disorders and substance use disorders co-occur at greater rates than either separately. It is suggested that oftentimes, the two go hand-in-hand. The NCBI reports: “The presence of an anxiety or substance use disorder is also a risk factor for the presence of the other disorder, as shown in both epidemiological and clinical samples”
Commonly Shared Anxiety Disorder Symptoms:
- Panic, fear, and uneasiness
- Inability to calm down
- Cold, sweaty, numb or tingling hands or feet
- Shortness of breath
- Heart palpitations
- Dry mouth
- Tense muscles
Substance abuse can exacerbate anxiety disorder symptoms and vice versa. This makes for a vicious cycle that oftentimes requires professional help to treat.
