What is
Ecstasy and MDMA
MDMA, often referred to as ecstasy or “molly” is a psychoactive drug that is derived from safrole oil. MDMA is the scientific name for the drug and anything that is sold as “ecstasy” or “molly” could actually be cut with other drugs, and could even contain no MDMA whatsoever. MDMA and ecstasy do not usually lead to physical dependence as other drugs, but people may exhibit a psychological dependence on the drug. Here at our Ecstasy/MDMA addiction rehab center Panama City Beach Florida, we offer treatment programs that are designed to help overcome the psychological issues behind the dependency.
ECSTASY
THE "CLUB" DRUG
Ecstasy is a popular “rave” party drug due to its stimulant-like effects. MDMA is usually taken as a capsule or tablet, although some swallow it in liquid form or snort the powder. The effects of the drug bring about feelings of intense energy. Users feel a close, trusting, uninhibited connection with those around them and intense sexual arousal. Nearly 80,000 drug users were surveyed for the Global Drugs Survey in 2014. Half reported going “clubbing” at least four times per year and MDMA was in the top five drugs used in the past year.
How Ecstasy and MDMA Work
Ecstasy and MDMA promote the release of huge amounts of norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine in the brain, three neurotransmitters involved in mood, sexual desire, appetite, and motivation. These same chemicals are responsible for dependency on heroin, opiates, and methamphetamine. MDMA induces feelings of euphoria, increased energy and distorted sensory processes leading the user to experience heightened senses such as touch, smell, taste, etc. The drug’s effects last anywhere from 3-6 hours.
During the week following use, an individual can experience the following symptoms:
- Irritability
- Impulsiveness and aggression
- Depression
- Trouble sleeping
- Anxiety
- Memory and attention problems
- Decreased appetite
- Lower interest in sex
Hyperthermia is one of the most common risks associated with ecstasy and MDMA. This dangerously high increase in body temperature, or heatstroke results from overexertion of the body. Since the drug is commonly associated with the nightclub scene, dancing for long periods without drinking enough water can cause hyperthermic reactions. In extreme cases, hyperthermia can lead to liver damage, kidney or heart failure, or even death.
Ecstasy and MDMA Withdrawals
Upon arrival at our Ecstasy/MDMA Rehab patients often report suffering serious psychological withdrawal symptoms. Commonly reported side effects of detoxing from ecstasy include:
- Extreme fatigue
- Depression
- Difficulty concentrating
- Disinterest in food
- Panic attacks
