Continuing Care After Residential Addiction Treatment

Tuesday, January 16, 2018 | By JP Emerald Coast

Residential addiction treatment sometimes referred to as inpatient addiction treatment, is a typical model that many seeking help for Substance Use Disorder enroll in. While the length of stay is always dependent on the individual person and determined on a case by case basis, an “average” stay may be 30, 60, or 90 days. This time frame is often dictated by insurance, acuity, and other external factors. Additional addiction treatment options that many are not aware of are the step-down levels of care at the PHP (partial hospitalization programming) and IOP (intensive outpatient programming) levels.

PHP programming varies one location to another and is always dependent on the patient’s specific need, but an average or “typical” regimen involves 6-8 hours of therapy and treatment daily Monday through Friday with inclusion of room and board on campus.

Intensive Outpatient programming is approximately 4 hours of therapy and treatment approximately 3 days a week with no housing on campus. Some patients may live at home or at a sober living facility during this phase. In many cases, insurance can be utilized for addiction treatment step-down programming at both the PHP and IOP levels.

Addiction is a disease that falls into the category of chronic disease meaning that there is not a cure, and it must be managed through ongoing care. Long-term sobriety success is dependent upon this ongoing care. Residential addiction treatment provides patients with a healthy reset, a safe detox, and some basic skills and programming, but it is most certainly not a cure for the disease of addiction. The ongoing care can come in any number of treatment options and continues through outpatient therapy, 12-step or other support group meetings, and event things like alumni participation.

One way JourneyPure addresses the chronic nature of addiction is through our JourneyPure Coaching app. This app pairs patients with live recovery coaches and the technology of an app to track events and progress helping keep our patients accountable to their program of recovery.
