Opiate Addiction Treatment
Opiates include a wide range of substances including legal drugs like morphine and codeine, as well as illegal drugs like heroin and opium. All of these substances are extracted from the seeds of the opium poppy plant. Commonly known painkillers, including OxyContin and Vicodin, include opiates in their formulation.
Because many times the term “opiate” is used for a legal prescription drug, there is a misconception that opiates are “safe.” The logic is that because the drugs’ active ingredients are natural and not synthesized, they’re not addictive. However, the opposite is true. The dangers of using opiates are very real. They are powerfully addictive.
Opiate addiction can cause destructive long-term effects including:
- Abdominal bloating
- Liver damage
- Brain damage
- Chronic respiratory depression
What to Expect?
The first step in the recovery program at JourneyPure Emerald Coast is a detoxification process in our fully-staffed medical facility. Clients are monitored around the clock by physicians, psychiatrists, and addiction therapists to make sure the detox process is as quick and comfortable as possible. Counselors will work with clients who may have undiagnosed mental health issue, and medication will be given as needed to help relieve withdrawal symptoms and reduce cravings.
Clients receive intense one-on-one counseling sessions with professional addiction therapists. It’s extremely important for each client to rediscover their self-identities, self-worth, and inner strength.
Our addiction therapists use a variety of psychotherapy techniques to get to the root of a client’s addiction, including cognitive behavioral therapy, psychotherapy, and motivational interviewing. During this process, clients learn how to redirect stress, anxiety, and unpleasant emotions and turn them into productive and healthy behaviors. They also learn about the diseases of addiction and regain their independence, which is necessary to complete a recovering program.
Counseling sessions occur in a small group environment — typically between 5 and 10 others who are experiencing similar addiction issues. This group counseling is moderated by a therapist and meant to help improve relational skills. It also provides an opportunity to discuss thoughts and concerns about the recovery process within a group of peers.
In addition to making sure that rules are followed within each group, therapists help to make sure that each person is respected and given the opportunity to express their thoughts and feelings without fear of retribution. They also offer clinical insights into any conflicts that arise within the group that can’t be resolved within the framework of discussion.
This group support is beneficial to many clients who appreciate sharing their stories with others who know exactly how they feel and what they’re going through at a physical, emotional, and spiritual level.
